Noel served with the 43 Infantry Battalion which was the first Irish battalion to serve in Lebanon. He recalls seeing a notice going up in Gormanston for soldiers to volunteer for service but states that he had been serving for less than eighteen months at the time and didn't think he would get selected. He recalls the rushed feeling, getting inoculations and briefings before going overseas. He recalls saying his goodbyes and feeling like he just wanted to get out to Lebanon. He recalls a mass in Arbour Hill Church the night before they left, then getting transport out to the airport.
