Ceannt was the Commandant of 4 Battalion, Dublin Brigade, Irish Volunteers during the Easter Rising and was based in the South Dublin Union, James's Street, Dublin. Following his capture after the Rising he was one of the executed leaders and was executed by firing squad at Kilmainham Gaol, Dublin.
