Pension Claim:

The file relates to Cathleen Healy’s receipt of a military service pension for her involvement with the Hibernian Rifles and Cumann na mBan. She was awarded six days of active service for the period 23–29 April 1916, along with recognised service between April 1917 and September 1923.

Healy joined the Hibernian Rifles in early 1915 and was mobilised on 23 April 1916 at Hibernian Hall, later reporting to St Stephen’s Green. During the Rising, she carried dispatches, transported supplies across various locations in Dublin, and assisted with cooking and first aid at Father Matthew Hall. Her brother Seán Healy, was killed during the Rising, and she herself was dismissed from her job shortly afterwards.

In the years that followed, she remained actively involved in republican activities, including fundraising for prisoners and transporting arms and ammunition. Her family home was used as a storage site for weapons, and she frequently assisted her father in moving them. She joined Cumann na mBan around late 1919 and continued her involvement into the War of Independence, at times transporting significant weaponry, including a machine gun.

During the Civil War, she reported to Barry’s Hotel and, despite being employed, continued her activities—organising large-scale collections, moving arms, and assisting in the manufacture of explosives at her father’s house, which had effectively become an ammunition workshop. She remained active until the ceasefire.
